సుమతీ శతకం — Sumathi Satakam

సుమతీ శతకం is a classical Telugu satakam (century of verses) composed by బద్దెన భూపాలుడు (Baddena Bhupaludu), a 13th-century king-poet of the Telugu country. Baddena — also known as Bhadrabhupala — ruled the Vengi region and is counted among the earliest Telugu poets whose work reached common people.

The hundred-odd verses of Sumathi Satakam are addressed to a wise friend — "సుమతీ!" — and compress practical ethics into memorable, singable meter. Friendship, humility, patience, right company and the vanity of wealth: each poem is a lesson you can carry in your pocket. Lines like "తన కోపమే తనకు శత్రువు" (one's own anger is one's own enemy) are quoted in everyday Telugu to this day.

On this site every verse is presented with the full Telugu text, transliteration, word-by-word meanings in Telugu and English, the overall భావం and audio recitation.
