Meaning

In English

Oh Sumati! Even if a man has mastered the entire science of love (Koka Shastra), possesses great beauty, or is an eminent king, he cannot win over a courtesan without giving ample money. It is a certain truth that such relationships are transactional and not based on personal merit or status.

Modern relevance

This verse serves as a timeless warning about transactional relationships where financial gain outweighs personal qualities like knowledge, looks, or social status. In the modern world, it reminds us that relationships built solely on material expectations ('cupboard love') are hollow and that money often dictates access in certain spheres, regardless of one's other virtues.
