Meaning

In English

Vemana questions the status of those who worship deities that crave liquor and meat, suggesting that eating the 'leftovers' of such impure offerings makes the devotee equally low, regardless of their social caste. In contrast, he asserts that true nobility is achieved not through such rituals, but through pure devotion to God (Hari).

Modern relevance

This verse challenges the hypocrisy of social hierarchy and superstitious rituals. In a modern context, it reminds us that our character is defined by our habits and spiritual purity rather than our birth or performative rituals. It encourages moving away from harmful practices (symbolized by meat and alcohol in worship) toward a more sattvic and devoted way of life.
