Meaning
In English
Hypocrites often display excessive humility to mask their true nature, much like an unchaste woman might wear a veil more strictly to feign modesty. Similarly, wicked people often perform religious rituals with excessive zeal to hide their lack of true character. True virtue does not require such ostentatious display.
Modern relevance
In today's world, this verse warns us against trusting people solely based on their outward appearance or excessive politeness. Often, those who shout the loudest about rules, morality, or tradition may be compensating for their own hidden flaws or lack of integrity. It teaches us to value authentic character over performative behavior.
