Meaning

In English

One cannot be free from worldly bonds without abandoning desire. Without freedom from these bonds, one cannot become a sage. Unless one becomes a sage, the deep-seated delusions of the mind will not disappear. Therefore, conquering desire is the fundamental step toward spiritual liberation.

Modern relevance

In the modern world driven by consumerism and the constant pursuit of material gain, this verse serves as a powerful reminder about mental health and contentment. It suggests that true peace of mind (becoming a 'sage') is impossible as long as we are enslaved by endless wants and attachments. To find clarity and reduce stress, one must practice the art of letting go and reducing dependency on external desires.
