Meaning
In English
Vemana advises against the excessive craving for family life, specifically wives and children, viewing such attachments as sources of grief rather than happiness. He compares entering into these worldly bonds to a fool who voluntarily lifts a heavy stone from the ground and places it on his own head, burdening himself unnecessarily.
Modern relevance
In a modern context, this verse serves as a warning against voluntarily taking on unnecessary stress and complications in the pursuit of societal expectations like marriage and family if one is not ready. It highlights the concept of 'emotional minimalism'—avoiding self-inflicted burdens and understanding that some pursuits, often glorified by society, can lead to mental anguish rather than peace.
