Meaning
In English
Even in times of severe famine, giving defiled or leftover food to others under the guise of charity is a grave sin. Vemana warns that those who offer such disrespectful alms, thinking themselves righteous, will be reborn as dogs destined to lick discarded leaf plates on the streets.
Modern relevance
This verse highlights the importance of dignity in charity. In the modern world, it reminds us not to donate expired food, torn clothes, or broken items to the needy just to clear our clutter. True charity lies in giving useful, high-quality resources with respect, rather than discarding what we no longer want.
