Meaning

In English

Vemana criticizes those who live without self-control throughout their lives but seek renunciation (Sanyasa) only when death is imminent. He asserts that salvation (Moksha) cannot be attained through last-minute rituals or external renunciation; it requires the true conquest of the self and senses.

Modern relevance

This verse is highly relevant today as it warns against procrastination and superficiality in self-improvement. It reminds us that genuine transformation requires consistent discipline and mastery over one's impulses, rather than seeking quick fixes or turning to spirituality only during crises or old age.
