Meaning
In English
Mere physical contortions like manipulating the stomach, closing the eyes, or holding the breath tight do not constitute true yoga. An ignorant ascetic who relies solely on these external feats is as helpless as a sheep in the clutches of the God of Death. Without true inner realization, physical austerities cannot save one from mortality.
Modern relevance
In today's world, this verse critiques the obsession with the physical aspects of yoga (fitness, flexibility, appearance) while neglecting its spiritual core. It reminds us that superficial practices or external displays of discipline are futile if they do not lead to inner transformation and wisdom. True wellbeing comes from understanding oneself, not just manipulating the body.
