Meaning
In English
Vemana argues that when one abstains from food, the digestive fire (Jatharagni) turns inward and consumes the waste present in the stomach. Therefore, a person observing a ritual fast is ironically abandoning good food to feed on their own impurities. The verse criticizes blind religious fasting as a physically degrading act rather than a spiritual one.
Modern relevance
This verse is highly relevant today as a critique of extreme dieting or dogmatic rituals that harm physical health. It reminds us that the body has biological needs that cannot be bypassed by ideology; ignoring them (starving) leads to the body consuming itself (autophagy/ketosis in a negative sense). It encourages a rational, balanced approach to health and spirituality rather than blind adherence to harmful practices.
