Meaning
In English
When a man possesses wealth and earning capacity, women (or family) treat him with utmost reverence, practically worshipping his feet. However, if that same man loses his wealth, they treat him with disdain, calling him a 'walking corpse'. This highlights the bitter truth that social respect and relationships are often conditional upon one's financial status.
Modern relevance
This verse remains highly relevant today, illustrating the transactional nature of modern relationships where respect is often tied to a person's job title or bank balance. It warns against believing that social status is permanent and reminds us that fair-weather friends and family may turn away during financial hardships. It encourages self-reliance and spiritual detachment over dependence on material validation.
