Meaning

In English

Food acts as a double-edged sword in human life. Excessive consumption leads to physical destruction (death/disease), while a complete lack of it causes the soul to suffer from starvation. Thus, food alone is a sufficient instrument to either kill or torment a person, emphasizing the critical need for moderation.

Modern relevance

This verse is highly relevant to modern lifestyle issues, contrasting the health risks of obesity and overeating with the global problem of hunger and malnutrition. It reminds us that food, which is essential for survival, can become a source of suffering if not managed with balance and moderation (Mitahara).
