Meaning
In English
Men and women, intoxicated by the energy derived from food, become arrogant and blame Cupid for their lustful torments. However, once that food is digested or when hunger strikes, that lust disappears. Vemana questions where Cupid goes in that absence, implying that desire is merely a biological product of sustenance, not an external divine force.
Modern relevance
This verse highlights the biological basis of human emotions, aligning with the modern understanding of Maslow's hierarchy of needs—where physiological needs (food) must be met before other desires arise. It teaches us that many of our 'uncontrollable' passions are fueled by excess consumption and energy. By regulating our diet and consumption, we can gain better control over our impulses and mental state.
