Meaning

In English

People thrive on food and worldly comforts, considering them 'Amrita' (the nectar of life) because they sustain the body. However, upon closer inspection, no one attains true immortality through these means. It is a paradox that the very things we consume to live can eventually turn into poison (causing disease or death) if misunderstood or abused.

Modern relevance

In the modern world, this verse reflects our obsession with material success, health fads, and consumption, which we pursue as the key to a 'good life' (Amrita). Yet, these pursuits often lead to lifestyle diseases, stress, and burnout (Poison). The verse reminds us that true well-being cannot be found solely in physical sustenance or external accumulation, as even the best things can become toxic in excess.
