Meaning

In English

Without self-realization, the study of Vedas is futile and akin to madness. The illusion and arrogance born of wealth are also a form of madness. Vemana proclaims to the world that the six Shastras and Puranas are merely diseases if they do not lead to the truth of the Self.

Modern relevance

This verse is highly relevant today as it warns against valuing academic degrees and material wealth over self-awareness and inner peace. It suggests that accumulating information or money without understanding one's true nature leads to a confused and 'diseased' state of mind. True wisdom lies in self-knowledge, not in external status or rote learning.
