Meaning
In English
Vemana asserts that a soul deluded into thinking the physical body is the true Self cannot attain salvation. Caught in the endless cycle of birth and death and ignorant of the righteous path, such a being wallows in misery without hope for liberation unless they overcome this fundamental delusion.
Modern relevance
In the contemporary world, this verse serves as a critique of extreme materialism and body-consciousness. It reminds us that obsessing over physical appearance and temporary worldly attachments (the 'body') while neglecting inner values and spiritual truth leads to a cycle of stress and dissatisfaction, preventing us from finding true peace or higher purpose.
