Meaning

In English

A person who asks for help only rarely retains their dignity and is not considered a beggar. Conversely, a person who does not give frequently cannot be called a true donor. The distinction between a donor and a beggar lies in the frequency and habit of their actions, not just a single act.

Modern relevance

In today's world, this verse reminds us that our character is defined by our consistent habits rather than isolated incidents. Asking for help in a genuine crisis does not lower one's status, but claiming to be generous without a consistent track record of giving is hollow. It encourages us to judge people (and ourselves) by their patterns of behavior rather than labels.
