దానధర్మాలు చేయుట మంచిదే, కానీ దానికంటే స్వయంప్రకాశం (కీర్తి/గౌరవం) గొప్పది. ఆ కీర్తి కంటెను వివేకం (జ్ఞానం) గొప్పది. ఆ వివేకం కంటెను దురాశను పూర్తిగా జయించుట (వైరాగ్యం) అన్నిటికన్నా శ్రేష్ఠమైనది. వేమన ఈ పద్యంలో మానవుని ఎదుగుదలకు సోపానాలను వివరించాడు.
