Meaning
In English
This verse poignantly describes the state of senility or extreme old age. The elderly person behaves erratically—laughing, singing, reading, praising without inhibition, and forgetting things immediately—much like a child or a madman. Vemana asks us to observe how old age ('Mudimi') completely transforms a person, stripping away their former dignity and identity to the point where one wonders, 'Who is this person now?'
Modern relevance
This verse is strikingly relevant to the modern experience of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. It reminds caregivers and society that the erratic behaviors of the elderly (repetitive speech, forgetfulness, uninhibited actions) are symptoms of the condition ('Mudimi') rather than the person's true self. It calls for empathy and understanding of the fragility of human identity as we age.
