Meaning

In English

When hatred ceases, desires wither away; when grief subsides, cravings end. When the thirst for worldly enjoyment is abandoned, the bonds of rebirth are broken. Ultimately, when one transcends the three Gunas (nature's qualities), the path to final liberation (Mukti) reveals itself.

Modern relevance

This verse offers a timeless psychological formula for peace: negative emotions like hatred and grief fuel our endless desires and attachments. By consciously reducing our craving for sensory pleasures and emotional reactivity (the 'Gunas'), we can break the cycle of stress and suffering. In a modern context, it suggests that true freedom comes not from acquiring more, but from letting go of mental agitation and compulsive attachments.
